Agricultural Numeracy: Uno How's Farm Visits Modules 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

As a means of tackling what our experience shows us to be a universal area of concern, AA International is releasing, through AgriTechTalk International CIC, a custom-built series of field numeracy classes, based on virtual farm visits undertaken by a virtual extension agent called "Uno How".

Uno How's exchanges with two farmers, "Tad" and "Mim" during farm visits may be followed through a sequence of graphics with links to explanations, simple calculations and exercises, as well as lots of practical numeracy tips. The series will appear as downloadable units which follow each other in a logical sequence.

Modules 1 and 2 were made possible by a grant from the USAID Technical and Operational Performance Support (TOPS) programme, via a pilot project that included the teaching of Modules 1 and 2 to agricultural officers and lead farmers in Karamoja, Uganda in 2014. A further grant in 2016 from TOPS enabled Modules 4 and 5 to be developed and for the numeracy work to continue in Karamoja. during 2016/2017.

Module 1 (Visits 1-4) - simple measurements of fields calculating the area of differently-shaped fields, rapid whole farm assessment.

Module 2 (Visits 5-8) - rates of application of seeds, fertilisers, dilution of sprays.

Module 3 (Visits 9-12) - estimating crop production and storage requirements.

Module 4 (Visits 13-16) - using farm products

Module 5 (Visits 17-20) - farming as a business

The series will continue with a range of applications covering:-

  • formulation of rations for livestock;
  • calculation of feed conversion efficiencies;
  • gross margin, profit and loss calculations.

Uno How's Farm Visits may be downloaded free of charge in the sequence in which they appear. At the end of the series, it is the intention of AgriTechTalk International CIC to release the full set, including any modifications, as a curriculum that may be taught on a face-to-face basis.
