Crop Yield Assessment in Somaliland, 2014 Print E-mail

At a Food Security Conference in Addis Ababa in October 2014, Concern Worldwide presented the results of its trial of AA International's PET Crops methodology to assess the yield of sorghum at harvest time....

Concern Worldwide presented a poster entitled "Alternative Crop Yield Assessment in Somaliland" at the “Information for Meeting Africa’s Agricultural Transformation and Food Security Goals (IMAAFS) conference” in Addis Ababa in October 2014. This conference was organised by the African Union Commission and the Joint Research Centre of the European. This poster describes how Concern staff used AA International's PET methodology to assess the yield of sorghum yields at harvest time in the Gabiley Region of Somaliland in 2013.

We would like to encourage other NGOs to similarly test and adopt the PET methodology for yield assessments in the future – but would point out that the best results (that is, the closest fit) are achieved when field assessors have received training in the PET methodology before hand. All field assessors who have worked on UN FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment missions employing the PET methodology (such as Sudan and South Sudan) have received full training from AA International Ltd before hand…
