Pam Gregory has just returned from working with EMESCO Development Foundation (EDF) to introduce beekeeping as a source of income for displaced and migrant people living in remote rural villages in the Ruteete Settlement Area of Western Uganda. 

Pam Gregory has just returned from working with EMESCO Development Foundation (EDF) to introduce beekeeping as a source of income for displaced and migrant people living in remote rural villages in the Ruteete Settlement Area of Western Uganda.  Pam helped EDF to design the project and prepare the funding proposal. With a successful funding bid in place, Pam visited EDF to implement sound working plans. Training in these projects is very important and Pam is a very experienced beekeeping trainer. This technical training is intended to help increase honey production and make locally constructed beekeeping equipment more easily available.

An innovative programme of decreasing physical inputs has been designed intended to gradually increase the participant’s ability to expand their beekeeping businesses independently. The market is very far from satisfied so there is plenty of economic potential for producers. A system of honey collection and retail sales is being created to enable producers to gain greater access to the domestic honey market.  An accessible marketing infrastructure will enable thousands of people in the district to set up a profitable beekeeping business. The marketing scheme is designed to become self-financing, farmers co-operative in the medium term.
